Overview

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Principal Field Safety, Health, & Radiological Protection Specialist to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).

The Principal Field Safety, Health, & Radiological Protection Specialist monitors, analyzes, and investigates workplace radiological activities and potential hazards to support company initiatives within assigned area or facility(s) through review of work packages, assessments, walk downs, inspections, and/or observations.Supportsthe Radiological Protection Programs for assigned facilities and/or areas along with coordination of other Safety & Health Programs. Identifies hazardous workplace conditions and removes hazards and/or protects employees by guarding, revising work procedures, and training or requiring use of protective clothing and personal protective equipment.Formulates and implements policies and practices to ensure the radiological health of employees.Provides support to ensure adherence to DOE, regulatory, and/or company rules and regulations.Responsible for identifying and mitigating hazardous conditions that affect workers, property, the environment, and the general public. Takes effective steps to ensure that workplace conditions comply with applicable federal, state, local and organization occupational safety and health standardsand radiological program requirements and standards, ensuring that all required records are prepared and maintained.Participates 10CFR835 inspections and in any procedures that may follow a citation.

Responsibilities

A Principal Field Safety, Health, & Radiological Protection Specialist:

  • Provide support to ensure adherence to Department of Energy (DOE) and regulatory requirements while applying and providing expert technical assistance on radiological protection programs through disciplined operations consistent with Savannah River Site (SRS)/Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) procedures and policies.

  • Incorporates advanced Safety and Health (S&H) practices and a variety of complex features into problem solving and programmatic planning where only general objectives are stated usually requiring creativity and ingenuity.

  • Evaluates or delegates proposals and makes recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks. Typically assigned to high risk, critical in scope, work packages.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to First Line Managers (FLMs) and nonexempt personnel. Ensuring facilities/area is in full compliance with all Federal, State, Company, and Site requirements to maintain exposure to site personnel and the public As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).

  • Monitor the conduct of training and qualification programs for radiological protection (RP) Inspectors and FLMs. Implement the facility's business plan to efficiently utilize resources by coordinating resource needs through daily and weekly planning meetings with facility Line Management.

  • Conducts assessments and/or Manager Field Observations (MFOs) within assigned area.

  • Represents and/or attends (as requested) safety and health meetings.

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge and understanding of all company and industry specific regulatory requirements/standards and official interpretations.

  • Incorporates innovation through extensive experience to develop, implement and maintain safety and health programs, systems and procedures of assigned facility.

  • Develops, designs, and conducts comprehensive occupational hazard inspection and monitoring strategies within a specialized field. May be requested to develop and conduct employee training, ensuring high quality of the program.

  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert for radiological protection activities within a facility and/or across the company.

  • Generates/gathers trending and other performance indicator reports. Presents to Project Directors and company Senior Management. May be asked to compile similar reports for customers and internal stakeholders as requested.

  • Reviews, enters, reports, and/or resolves Site Tracking, Analysis & Reporting (STAR) items regarding Safety and Health and/or radiological discipline and ensures safety controls have been put in place.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of industry’s innovative developments, processes, and techniques through successful implementation.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED or Associates degree and related experience

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering or related science and related experience

Additional information:

  • Must have a flexible schedule to work on-call as delegated by schedule.

  • Internal candidates in the Senior Safety & Health Specialist A level for two or more years may qualify for this level.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications for a Principal Field Safety, Health, & Radiological Protection Specialist:

  • 7+ years a Radiological Protection First Line Manager (FLM)

  • Prior experience with compiling, preparing and presenting radiological protection material to multiple management levels.

  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT)

  • Safety Trained Supervisor (STS)

Minimum Pay

USD $89,880.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay

USD $161,736.00/Yr.
